Stylish and impregnableDecember 2011 – New barracks have emerged on the site of the Kromhout Barracks in Utrecht. They will be home to the headquarters of the Royal Netherlands Army, as well as to some units of the Command Services Centres and the Defence Equipment Organisation. The steel security fencing that surrounds the barracks is hot-dip galvanised by Verzinkerij Wolvega. The Dutch Armed Forces are no longer an organisation that focuses exclusively on defending national borders; they can now be deployed throughout the world. The image of “the new armed forces” is reflected in the design of the barracks. Transparent and welcomingThe new Kromhout Barracks are surrounded by steel security fencing made up of panels in which diagonal cuts have been made randomly, generating a playful interplay of shadow and light. The fencing looks transparent and welcoming but it is exceptionally strong and it complies with extremely strict security requirements. This unique panel fencing was produced by Hexta Hekwerk & Terreinbeveiliging from Katwijk and it was hot-dip galvanised by Verzinkerij Wolvega. So Hexta and Verzinkerij Wolvega have developed durable fencing that looks great but is still impenetrable.
